British astronomer (1837-1888) best remembered for having produced one of the earliest maps of Mars in 1867. ALS signed "Richard A. Proctor," one page, 4.5 x 7, August 8, 1887. Handwritten letter to "the Editor of Harper's Weekly," in full: "The enclosed short article on 'The Solar Corona & the Sun Spots' may be regarded as equally suitable either shortly before or shortly after the eclipse of August 19th. As the news of eclipse observations comes in points such as I have touched on in this article will be of interest, I think, to many." In fine condition. This total solar eclipse was visible across Europe, Asia, and Japan.
