Prior to that they would have been outside and presiding over the drying and blessing (in ritual) of that years rice crop. 16-1/2" tall, they are male and female with weakly defined sexuality (the influence of the American presence after 1898). The importance of Pairs in protecting crop and home advanced in the 20th century, as ideals of marriage and staying together for life were promulgated by the Americans. A quality-sculpted pair that are 2 or 3 generations old (1945-1960 vintage). The male has a crack to the side of his head and an old depressed area at the top of his head for making sacrifices and offerings to the spirits.
