<Our item number 110861><B>Reynolds, John Fulton.</B> &#40;1820-63&#41; One of the most highly esteemed of Union corps commanders; killed by a Confederate marksman at Gettysburg. Autograph Document Signed &#34;<I>John F. Reynolds, MG Co</I>,&#34; just four days before he was killed, one page, 6¾&#34; x 4&#34;, Middletown, 27 June 1963. Written in pencil on paper printed &#34;Head Quarters, First Army Corps&#34; and &#34;By command of Brig. General Reynolds,&#34; which Reynolds crossed out since he wrote the document himself. Written hurriedly to &#34;<I>Maj Genl Butterfield Chf. of Staff</I>.&#34; In part: &#34;<I>Genl</I> [Oliver Otis] <I>Howard & I have forwarded all the information</I>…[David Bell] <I>Birney is at Jefferson & will be here tonight encamping on Howard&#39;s left. My Corps is on his Right….A Brigade & Battry of Birney&#39;s Corps had been ordered to…Howards at Cramptons pass before I got this news from Boonsboro</I>….&#34; Reynolds was in charge of three corps at the time he was ordere d to occupy Gettysburg: his own I Corps under Doubleday, the III Corps under Sickles, and the XI Corps under Howard. On the first day of the fight &#40;July 1, 1863&#41; while positioning the 2nd Wisconsin to reinforce John Buford&#39;s cavalry, Reynolds was killed instantly. A statue of Reynolds stands at Gettyburg where he fell. <BR>Estimated Value &#36;1,500-2,000. <I><BR>Ex Rosengarten family of Philadelphia. They sold anti-malarial quinine to both sides during the Civil War.
