Noted African-American stage and screen actor (1895–1969), best known for his roles in Green Pastures, The Thief of Bagdad, and Cabin in the Sky. His personal life came under scrutiny in 1949 when he was arrested and imprisoned for ten months for violating the Mann Act, which impacted the remainder of his career.
