Revolutionary War–dated manuscript DS, signed “P. Clayes Capt.,” one page, 12.5 x 8, December 21, 1780. Document headed “Descriptive List of Capt. Peter Clayes’s Comp’y,” listing the names of all nineteen men in the company along with when they enlisted, by whom they were enlisted, age, stature, complexion, hair and eye color, trade, and residence. Several of the men are listed as having dark hair, dark eyes, and dark complexion, suggesting that they may be African-Americans; a known freed slave, Peter Salem, had served with Clayes in the 6th Massachusetts from 1775 to 1779. In very good condition, with scattered overall foxing and repaired paper loss to lower left corner. Clayes served under Col. John Nixon throughout the war and took part in the Battle of Saratoga.
