Scarce Revolutionary War pamphlet, printed on order of the Second Continental Congress, advising colonists on the manufacture of saltpeter, an critical ingredient of gunpowder. Dated 17 January 1776, with an introduction by Pierre Van Cortlandt of New York, who served in the Congress from November 1775 to May 1777, and as Chairman of the Committee of Safety. Reads in part, ''…The Ministry, flattering themselves, that so young a country, unused to manufacturers of every kind, will not be able to procure the means of defense within itself, have made, and will undoubtedly continue to make it a principal object of their attention, to preclude us from foreign supplies…'' 38pp. octavo volume disbound and uncut. Lacking title page, otherwise text complete. Leaf C6 (pages 35-36) included twice. Pamphlet included in following references of definitive American history texts: Sabin 22988; Evans 14930; Eberstadt 134:29. Light to moderate foxing and toning; heavy edge-wear and small closed tear (within text) to the second copy of leaf C6. Tiny stab holes to inner margins and occasional small holes. A very good copy of a rare primary source from the Revolutionary War. Pamphlet contained in a custom quarter leather portfolio case with gilt edged spine.
