<B>[Revolutionary War] John Cleves Symmes Pay List Document Signed.</B></I> One page with docketing on verso, 13" x 8", New Jersey, 1775-1776. A pay list for clothing and bedding the soldiers in 1776 and 1777. It covers the period and the geography of Washington's crossing of the Delaware River and the Battles of Trenton and Princeton. The sheet is ruled for accounting, with columns for the date, the description of items, and the total amount of monies spent for each item. The dates cover December 1, 1776, through June 27, 1777. The verso reads "<I>The State Cloathing Acct</B></I>". <BR><BR>John Cleve Symmes (1742-1814) was a delegate to the Continental Congress from New Jersey, and later a pioneer in the Northwest Territory, settling the area now known as North Bend, Ohio. He was also the father-in-law of President William Henry Harrison. A supporter of the revolution, Symmes became chairman of the Sussex County, New Jersey Committee of Safety in 1774. When the Revolutionary war began in earnest, he served as colonel of the 3rd Regiment of the Sussex County militia and was called into service with the Continental Army on several actions. Symmes served on the New Jersey Supreme Court 1777-1778 and was then appointed to the State Council by Governor Livingston (whose daughter he married).
