Not even a month before the signing of the Declaration of Independence, a doomed soldier writes home to his father a touching letter about his feelings and fortifying the Jerseyside. The writer would later die aboard the notorious HMS Jersey Prison ship. The letter reads, in part (spelling corrected): "Honored parents, after my duty to you and my love to my brothers and sisters, I will inform you that I am well and hope this will find you and your family so. I have been well and hearty ever since I left Roxbury. Our duty is very hard I...of but one day in three. It is chiefly fortage we are fortifying upon the Jersey side and it is as strong as any place in America. There is abundance of news flying but no great to be depended on. There is a talk of ships being come in below but no appearance of any at town. It is a general time of health in the camp we have not one man sick more than a...Ensign well received from his wife and she sent me word that you were all well and I was glad to hear it. I shall send this letter by Sgt. Shaw and he will leave it to Mr. Bannses and he will take letters from there to bring back to York and if you be would take the trouble to send me one I should very glad for I want to hear from you all. Give my love to grandmother and tell her I am well. Remember me to my brothers and sisters and especially to...and tell him to be a good boy and if I should live to come home I will bring him something that he never see the water being warm and being in a great hurry to go to meeting. I must conclude wishing you all well so no more at present I remain your dutiful son Isaac Stetson." Included are prints of the Jersey ship suffering, as well as an old auction description.
