Exceptional archive of items from the 1777 Battle of Danbury, where British General William Tryon directed his soldiers to destroy houses and supply warehouses before being challenged by American Generals Gold Selleck Silliman and Benedict Arnold. Archive includes: (1) Manuscript document signed ''G S Silliman Brig Genl'' dated 31 March 1778 and headed ''State of Connecticut To Peter Jennings for Service done in Carting in the Danbury expedition &c April 1777.'' The lower portion, above Silliman's signature, certifies Jennings expenses. Single page measures 7.75'' x 7''. (2) Document signed by Oliver Wolcott, Jr., Declaration of Independence signer. Order to John Lawrence, Treasurer of Connecticut, to pay expenses ''by Genl Silliman Order to Carry the Orders from the Governor to the Several Towns…'' Signed across lower portion, ''Oliv Wolcott Jr Audr.'' Single 7.5'' x 9'' page dated 3 May 1777. (3) Document signed ''John Taylor'' and witnessed by ''John Gregory'' and ''Ephraim Gregory'' from Danbury, Connecticut on 25 March 1724. In part: ''To all Christian People To Whom these Presents Shall Come Greetg. Know ye John Taylor of Danbury in Fairfield County in his Majesties Colony of Connecticut in Newengland for and in consideration of a valuable sum of Money in hand Received Being well and Truly paid Before the ensealing of These presents By John Wilkes of the Town County and colony before named…'' Single page measures 7.5'' x 9.25''. (4-9) Five autograph documents signed by William Moseley, and one unsigned, from the Pay Table Office, certifying the wounds and compensation for soldiers who fought at Danbury. All documents generally in very good condition with expected soiling and toning.
