Revenue Cutter Service Smith & Wesson Model No. 3 Single Action Revolver, with factory letter, #23895, .44 S&W cal., 6'' barrel, blue finish, case hardened triggerguard and hammer, with factory checkered walnut grips. Listed by serial number in the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wessons. In 1890 the Revenue Cutter Service, later to be named the U.S. Coast Guard, purchased approx. 140 No. 3 revolvers with 12 being issued to each ship or cutter, this gun being shipped June 27, 1890, and having the cylinder switched from a later serialized gun, also in the Revenue Cutter range, which is a common occurrence on this type revolver. Condition is about fine retaining approx. 70% thinning and toning blue with light to moderate micro-scratching overall. Grips show moderate flattening. Action remains crisp and tight, bore is excellent. Est.: $5,000-$7,500. (Antique)
