Return of the Vampire (Columbia, 1943). Australian Dayb Return of the Vampire (Columbia, 1943).
Return of the Vampire (Columbia, 1943). Australian Daybill (15" X 32"). Like Sean Connery playing a spy not named James Bond, Bela Lugosi plays a vampire without the Dracula name and cache; the rights of which were owned by Universal. Striving for timeliness, the vampire Armand Tesla (named for the inventor? or the '80s hair-metal band?) arises with a blast from the London Blitz. Entombed since the end of World War I, Tesla receives help from a talking werewolf (which sounds like a perverse variation on Disney's talking animal sidekick), who brings him new victims. Tesla has his eyes on the jugular of Nicki Saunders (Nina Foch), but Lady Jane Ainsley (Frieda Inescort) has her suspicions about this stranger -- mainly that hanging out with a talking werewolf is a little weird. This Australian daybill features a reptilian Lugosi creepily fondling the throat of the young maiden. Wear in the borders has been restored with linen backing, and the fold line made nearly invisible with a paint touch-up. Fine on Linen.
