Restored Pre-64 1947 Winchester Model 70 Carbine .300 Savage 20" Cloverleaf Tang Bolt Action Rifle

Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 70 is an iconic American sporting rifle that has been a staple of hunters for more than 80 years; reliable, robust, and accurate, it is one of the benchmarks by which all bolt action rifles are measured. It has more than earned its nickname of "The Riflemans Rifle", a true icon. This is a Custom vintage pre-1964 Winchester Model 70 in Carbine configuration that is chambered in .300 Savage. This is inspired by a fairly scarce variant, the original Carbines made up about 1.25% of Pre-64 Model 70 production and there were only 362 of any configuration chambered for the .300 Savage. Originally developed for the Savage Model 99, the .300 Savage could push a 150 grain bullet to about 2,600 fps, fairly close to the more modern .308 Winchester. This custom rifle has been refinished and looks great. As a pre-64 Model 70 in high condition, with a great bore it will be a great shooter and a very neat addition to your collection. Please see our photos and good luck!

Serial Number: 58932

Year of Manufacture: 1947

Caliber: .300 Savage

Barrel Length: 20"

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a beaded blade dovetailed to a hooded, ramped, textured base fixed to the front of the barrel. There is a dovetail in a boss at the rear of the barrel filled with a blank. The chamber ring (not the bridge) is drilled, tapped and filled for an optic (none present). The left-rear of the receiver is drilled and tapped for a Lyman WJS receiver sight, adjustable for windage and elevation. The assembly numbers on the sight mount and arm are not matching.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is one-piece checkered walnut with pistol grip, straight comb, checkered steel buttplate and sling swivels front and rear. The stock has a few light compression marks and a few little marks through the finish. There is a very small relief on the left for the elevation shank of the receiver sight. The checkering is well defined. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures 13 5/8" from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The plate has infrequent very faint oxidation with well defined checkering. The stocks rate in about Fine overall condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore, but there are a few minor marks. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 9 out of 10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 98% of its metal finish. There is light finish wear on some of the edges and a few spots of minor discoloration. The screw heads range from sharp to lightly tool marked with strong slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in about Fine condition as restored.
