Before giving hope to video store clerks everywhere, this film simply began as a script that Quentin Tarantino planned to shoot with friends. Actor Harvey Keitel received a copy and asked for a role if he could help get it made. The elements now seem familiar, after a decade of Tarantino knock-offs, but no simple <I>pastiche</B></I> of Hong Kong <I>mise en scene</B></I>, hard-boiled crime caper plots and pop culture allusions can equal Tarantino's assured artistry. He eschews linear narrative, letting flashbacks and naturalistic dialogue develop character. This rolled one sheet has only a bit of light edge wrinkling.
