Content includes more than 250 items of highly important historical material documenting the mission to Washington, D.C. after Texas achieved independence. Never before seen by scholars or the general public,subjects in the collection include letters and documents such as the Treaty of Velasco, proposals for annexation of Texas to the U.S., boundary issues, Native Americans, relations with Mexico, Texas Navy, financial arrangements for loans, bonds, etc., and other such matters. Writers of particular note are Stephen F. Austin (as Secretary of State of the Republic); succeeding Secretaries of State from Texas, including James Pinckney Henderson and R.A. Irion; John Forsyth (Secretary of State for the U. S.); James Treat (diplomatic agent for the Republic of Texas to Mexico); William H. Wharton (first minister of the Texas legation); succeeding Texas ministers Memucan Hunt, Anson Jones et al.; agents and personnel of the Texas Navy; financial agents for Texas; and persons of note, such as Samuel F. B. Morse, Joel Poinsett, Robert Triplett, Toby Brothers, Branch T. Archer, Thomas Jefferson Chambers, Samuel May Williams, W. Fairfax Gray, and G.W. Hockley. <BR><BR>Although all property belonging to the Republic of Texas became property of the State of Texas upon annexation in 1845, this incredible collection was never deposited in the State Archives and has been in private hands for 161 years. Today the Texas State Historical Association is assisting officials of the State of Texas in placing the collection in the custody of the Texas State Library and Archives Commission. <BR><BR>The Texas State Historical Association has been given the opportunity to auction the right of a donor to select a State approved institution to exhibit the collection for five years, after which the collection will be deposited in the permanent care of the Texas State Library and Archives Commission. The donor will receive all appropriate recognition for his or her role in securing this Texas treasure for the benefit of the people of Texas. <BR><BR>The TSHA is grateful to the present custodians of this collection for their stewardship throughout the years and for their cooperation in placing the collection in the State Archives. Consigned Lot <BR><BR><b>This 2006 March Texas State Historical Association Charity Auction is being held in Austin, TX on February 12 - March 4, 2006. This is a charity auction. All proceeds from donated lots in the auction, commissions from consigned lots, and the buyer's premium go solely to the Texas State Historical Association. The floor auction session is by invitation only. Online bidding ends March 3, 2006 at 10:00PM CT. Your secret maximum bid will compete for you during the floor auction, and it is possible that you may be outbid on the floor after internet bidding closes. The applicable buyer's premium for this auction is an amount equal to 15% (minimum $9 per lot) of the successful bid on ebay. State law requires lots consigned (not donated) to THSA collect full sales tax on items that sell for a total of $5,000 or more. </b>
