RARE early Republic of Texas, Galveston land grant. Signed by Republic of Texas President Mirabeau B. Lamar lower right, dated February 25, 1839. This land grant No. 25 to Thomas Jefferson Chambers for lots in the City of Galveston on Galveston Island. The second oldest surviving document of this type issued by the infant Republic of Texas. Lamar signed land grants are the rarest of all. Also signed lower left by John P. Borden, Signed by John P. Borden, participant in the Texas Revolution and the first commissioner of the General Land Office of Texas. Member of Stephen F. Austin's 2nd Colony, at the time this document was signed, he had already participated in taking Goliad in 1835, the Siege of Bexar, and was present at the Battle of San Jacinto. In late 1836 John and his brother Gail surveyed and laid out the City of Houston. In 1830 as the first Texas land Commissioner Borden took on the task of moving the land office archives from Houston to Austin, being granted $1,200 to move almost 5,000 pounds of document. In 1842, Borden was a member of the Somervell expedition, however did not go on to Mier, rather moving on to Galveston to study law and becoming an agent for the Galveston City Company.
