Washington. Report of the Secretary of War. 173pp plus maps. 6 x 9.5”. Marbled boards with wear. Red cloth corners and spine professionally replaced. X-library. Card removed from inside back cover. Library Markings throughout. This remarkable government work is the first detailed published account of the Yellowstone River drainage. Raynolds and his team in 1859-1860, and, not unlike the mining and railroad explorations publications, was delayed in printing by eight years. In this case, after the expedition was completed in 1860, Raynolds became very ill and was incapable of performing his job. When he started to get better, he was given “triple duty”, non-inclusive of preparation of this report, which delayed its production further. The report discusses the Yellowstone drainage, upper Missouri River, and various tributaries to the Yellowstone, including the famous Big Horn. He discusses the navigability of the Missouri, Yellowstone and Big Horn rivers, as well as the wagon routes and possible railroad routes. Certainly of keen interest is a half page report on Mineral Products, where he positively states that gold has been discovered in the Valley of the Madison and in the Big Horn Mountains. This news would have brought in prospectors from afar. He suggested an expedition just like his own for the sole purpose of exploration for precious metals. Much discussion of Native American tribes. The majority of the work is a day to day journal, very fascinating reading. A key and important reference.City: County: State: WYDate:
