Reno,NV - Washoe County - c1895 - Salvation Army Band Photograph :
Band poses with instruments. Photograph measures 8”x6”, tan single matte—upper right corner missing, high contrast—tends toward the blacks, and focus is sharp. The tear on the upper right corner extends to a very small tear on the photo (1/8”). On the photo “S.A. CORPS, RENO, NEV” is written. This is a great early photo of the Salvation Army Band posing in front of two flags. The US flag is on the left and the Salvation Army flag is on the right. The Salvation Army was born out of William Booth’s vision of a church accessible to the destitute in society. Booth began his work in 1865, but the name Salvation Army did not materialize until 1878. By 1900, the Salvation Army had become a worldwide organization. The S.A. Corps was brought to Northern Nevada in 1889.
