Reno,NV - Washoe County - July 4th 1910 - Johnson Jeffries Fight Street Scene Post Cards (2) :
These two postcards capture the crowd excitement and setting of the Johnson/Jefferies Heavyweight Championship fight. Jeffries had been touted as the “Great White Hope” because Johnson had been the Heavyweight Champion since beating Bob Fitzsimmons in 1907. People searched everywhere for an opponent and came up with Jim Jeffries as the savior of the white race. But he failed. Jack Johnson won the fight and riots started occurring all over the states in protest of a black man winning the title. Blacks, on the other hand, also celebrated around the nation in hopes of advancement in the white world. Evidently, the ring was still up in August of 1910 because on the back of the post cards, E O’Neill wrote “We were here . . . [and] walked to the Arena.” The post cards are in pristine condition.
