A classic view of Jack Johnson and Jim Jeffries, squaring off in the 14th round of "The Fight of the Century," on July 4th 1910, in Reno, NV. The photograph measures 16 x 11", mounted on a black matte inside a wooden frame measuring 22 x16 1/2". The contrast is high and the focus is good. The paper backing on the reverse is badly torn, with tape holding several pieces together. The enhancement causes the spectators faces to be indistinguishable. It also highlights the two men and the banner reading "James E. Pepper Whisky, Born With The Republic," which appears to have been added to the image at a later date above the heads of the crowd. No photographer is listed. In this image Johnson looks the stronger of the two men, while Jeffries appears to be fatigued and tentative. While the image is of the 14th round, the fight lasted 15 rounds, with Jeffries' attendants "throwing in the towel," possibly to avoid their champion being "knocked out" by Johnson. This fight pitted the defending heavyweight champion, Jack Johnson, against the undefeated former heavyweight champion, James J. Jeffries. Racial supremacy and the Heavyweight Crown was on the line as Johnson, the first black Heavyweight Champion, was matched against Jeffries, who became known as “The Great White Hope.” (Ref: boxinginsider.com)
