Iwo Jima hero, Rene Gagnon autograph letter signed during World War II, penned on 2 August 1943 from Charleston, South Carolina to his girlfriend Pauline Harnois. Lot also includes the original free franked mailing envelope, with Gagnon's full name handwritten by him in the return portion, ''P.F.C. R.A. Gagnon U.S.M.C.'' Letter on U.S. Marine Corps stationery reads in part, ''...They just put up the list of names of those that are leaving for combat duty overseas...There are supposed to be 19 of them, if my name is on there I guess I'll have to wait till the war is over to see you again...I'll write and tell you if my name was on it tomorrow...Rene''. Two page letter measures 7'' x 10.5'', on embossed U.S. Marine Corps stationery. Folds, overall very good condition.
