The white cloths swathing their heads and coiling over their shoulders could be part of a game, a comment on mysteries, secrecy or pretence between people, or something more sinister.
When René Magritte was thirteen his mother’s body was found in the river, supposedly with her nightgown around her face. As he said, he never found out ‘whether she had covered her eyes with it so as not to see the death she had chosen, or whether she had been veiled in that way by the swirling currents’. Like many other Surrealists, Magritte was fascinated by Fantômas, the shadowy hero of a thriller series of novels and films whose identity remained secret because his face was disguised by a cloth or stocking.
Magritte said he was not a painter, but a man who thought and who communicated his thought by painting instead of words or music. He resisted interpretations of his works, scorning the flight from the poetry and mystery of an image into comfortable explanations.

1. Kristen Leighs auctions limited has endeavored to accurately describe all items being sold. All items are sold as is, where is, with all faults. There are no warranties or representations of merchant-ability of fitness, nor of any other kind, express or implied. All items are available for your examination prior to bidding by appointment only. Your bidding will signify that you have examined the items as fully as desired, or that you have chosen not to examine them. 2. The auctioneer will be the final judge as to who is the succesful bidder. In the event of a dispute, the auctioneer shall at his discretion decide whether or not to reopen the bidding. If an item is withdrawn from auction it will be offered again at the auctioneers discretion. Title to all merchandise shall pass to the succesful bidder at the fall of the auctioneers hammer. The purchaser shall assume full responsibility for the lot purchased once title has passed. All lots in the catalogue are subject to a reserve, of which the amount is confidental between Kristen Leighs auctions limited and the consigner. We reserve the right to bid up to the amount of reserve by placing successive or consecutive bids for a lot, or bid in response to other bidders.
POSTAGE:
3.The auction house has at any time the right to void the sale before any lots are shipped and will refund all monies paid within a reasonable amount of time normally within 2 weeks
3a. Invoices will be sent to the winning bidder within 5 days (for postage) of the close of the auction. And payment is due within 3 days of the invoice being sent. Payment is accepted visa card or MasterCard or bank transfer with www.wise.com (see important notice for a special future discount rate) or can be made via our intergrated card invoice for international customers with an additional 2.5 percent.
SHIPPING.
A sihipping quote is provided by Kristen Leighs auctions limited on invoices and automatically includes tracking, which can be tracked on your end to your address. Insurance isn't included and can be added at an extra cost by contacting us. Please note glass in frames isn't covered by insurance and can be replaced for perspex if need be.
4. In bidding on any lot offered, the bidder indicates acceptance of these terms and conditions. Title of each lot passes when the auctioneer or screen indicates sold. The bidder is responsible for knowing on which item he/she is bidding. If unsure the bidder should inquire or not bid. When becoming the winning bidder at auction, you have affected a contract and will be expected to pay for items in which you were evidenced to be the successful bidder.
Most of our autographed lots are supplied with third party authenticity certificate. Please ask if the lot comes with certificate of authenticity though as some lots don’t come with this. Important notice for customers about Coas - these are as opinion expressed by a company as to it being genuine. No companies that issue coas guarantee their coas prove an items authenticity, they can only provide their opinion, but the companies used have extensive knowledge and have decades of years in this field. We welcome all bidders to do their own research before bidding, and to ask questions before bidding as the winner of a lot will enter into a legally binding contract to pay for the lot. As in condition of a lot, we give no opinions, and items are sold as seen.
