Remington New Model Police Engraved Revolver c1865
This lot features a Remington Arms Co. New Model Police .36 Caliber Percussion Revolver with incredibly rare factory engraving. The Remington New Model Police revolver is a single action percussion pistol with five shot revolving cylinder. This is a truly exciting original Remington revolver, not just because of the extremely low serial number, but because it is factory engraved. This may have been a special salesman sample or perhaps an early presentation revolver as it was surely one of the first made and possibly the first to be factory engraved. It has typical simple Remington engraving on the back strap, frame sides and top strap, fine Remington Markings and correct “NEW MODEL” with very rare single 1858 patent date (used only on the earliest of production) on the 3 ½” octagon barrel- shortest length offered. This length barrel was very desirable in that these were often used as hideout guns carried concealed or as belt revolvers in holsters. Most of the Remington New Model Police revolvers usually showed walnut grips as standard, with this being a special-order fancy edition having rosewood grips with high finish to them that is still intact, mellow uncleaned brass trigger guard, mostly an honest and uncleaned patina to the metal with excellent mechanics and tight action. Many of these were later converted to cartridge and are less desirable than those that remain in the original percussion ignition system such is this fine example. A fine condition unaltered, honest factory engraved fancy Remington with an amazingly low serial number made during the last year of the Civil War. Serial Number of 34 (of 18,000+) manufactured in 1865. Barrel is marked "PATENTED SEPT 14 1858 MARCH 17 1865 E REMINGTON & SONS ILION NEW YORK USA NEW MODEL". A few of these early serial number engraved pistols have come on the public market with many notable auction houses attributing the engraving to Louis Daniel Nimschke, one of the most notable master firearms engravers of the 19th Century. This is one of the finest first year production and possibly first factory engraved New Model Police ever brought to public sale! Antique Firearms requires NO FFL. Some lesser or similar quality engraved New Model Police Revolvers have been valued over $12,000 with this example being much earlier.
