Introduced in the 1930s as a collaborative effort between Remington and the Peace Officer Equipment Company, the Special Police took many features that Peace Officer made custom for the Model 8 and made them factory standard, including the extended forearm and 15 round detachable magazine. Intended to bridge the firepower gap between the lawmen and the lawbreakers, these Model 81s presaged the concept of the modern full power semi-automatic "battle rifle". Blade front and semi-buckhorn rear sights, with the two line address and patent markings on top of the barrel. The frame bears the standard model markings, with the upper left side factory marked "POLICE GUN - Property of" next to "SHERIFF DEPT. NO. 41/ LOS ANGELES COUNTY", and the magazine bears the makers markings and matching serial number on the left side. Smooth pistol grip stock, with beavertail forearm, sling eyelets and a checkered flat buttplate.
