Civil War U.S. Model 1863 ''Zouave'' Contract Muzzleloading Percussion Infantry Rifle, by Remington, with saber bayonet and scabbard, NVSN, .58 cal., 33'' round barrel with block-blade front and three-leaf rear sights and bayonet lug on right side at muzzle, marked ''V/P/(eagle head)'' and ''1863'' at breech; bevel-edge lockplate is marked with a spread-wing eagle clutching olive branches over ''U.S.'' and ''Remington's/Ilion, N.Y.'' ahead of hammer and ''1863'' behind; brass furniture including triggerguard with iron sling swivel at front, small patchbox opening to a buttstock trap containing a spare nipple, buttplate marked ''U.S.'' on top tang, two spring-retained barrel bands (top with iron sling swivel), and nosecap; oil-stained walnut fullstock; steel tulip-head ramrod. Mfg'd ca. 1862-65. Condition is very good to near fine, the steel parts having a clean and smooth gunmetal gray-brownish patina (with minor pitting at breech), sharp edges and clear markings, the brass parts with a soft age patina. Stock is smooth and solid showing pleasing grain and color and only minor handling/use marks (heavier on left side between bands) and a fairly sharp inspector's cartouche on left sideplate apron. Correct brass-handled bayonet having a smooth, clean steel blade; matching scabbard with brass frog and drag and flaking but intact leather. The Remington ''Zouave'' rifle is a favorite among collectors. Est.: $2,500-$3,500. (Antique)
