The Keene bolt action system was Remington's first attempt at producing a repeating rifle to compete with the lever action Winchesters. These were produced from 1880-1884 with a total production of approximately 5,000. This model was the first magazine fed rifle produced by Remington. It has a loading gate on the bottom of the rifle in front of the trigger guard. The top of the bolt is marked "E. REMINGTON & SONS, ILION, N.Y. / PATENT FEBY. 24. MCH 17. 1874 JAN. 18/SEP. 26. 1876 MCH 20 JULY 31 1877." There is no caliber designation, but the barrel gauges at 45, so writer believes it is 45-70 caliber. All blue finish except for the bright bolt and casehardened hammer mounted on the end of the bolt. The rear sight is a standard Remington folding single leaf sight with the left arm graduated 1,2,3 for use with the horizontal notch and 4-10 on the right arm for use with the slide when the leaf is in the vertical position. The front sight is a brass post mounted on a dovetail base on the front barrel band. Mounted with a smooth one-piece straight grip half stock with iron forend cap and carbine style buttplate with cleaning rod compartment with three-piece cleaning rod.
