Remington Keene .45-70 bolt action repeating rifle inspected by Henry Nettleton with original markings “U. S. I.D. 287” indicating use by the United States Interior Department who issued them to Indian Police on the western frontierreservations. The metal surfaces show a light gray to brown patina finish with some faint traces of blue where protected. There is some scattered light to moderate erosion and pinprick pitting. The original rear sight is retained and the frontsight is a period hand-made brass sight neatly inlaid into the front barrel band. The stock shows a large crack around the wrist, some losses of wood around the rear of the tang, dings, dents and general hard use. We would rate the stock atfair. The action works well and the bore is worn but fairly clean. An absolutely real U.S. I.D. marked Remington formerly in the noted Gordon Mattson collection who wrote many articles on Indian Police arms and collected them from the1950s to the 1990s. Mr. Mattson obtained a number of his arms directly from the families of the Indian police who had carried them. Est.: $2500-$5000
