Remington, Frederic
Remington, Frederic (1861-1909) American painter, illustrator, and sculptor; best known for scenes from the American West. Autograph Letter Signed, on stationery engraved "Ingleneuk, Chippewa Bay, N.Y., 3pp (2 conjoined sheets), 7½ x 4¾ in., n.d. (c. 1901). To "My dear Ralph," with interesting content. In part: "I came up here on the St. Lawrence river--I have bought an island back here in my own country for which I have a Boy like affection….I am sorry for your generally ruined condition but I believe that mostly befels warriors. I didn't get over Santiago [Remington rode with the Fifth Corps in 1898 during the Spanish American War] for a year and I don't want anymore. I only look up 'followng the guides' as a part of my art schooling and now I know all I care to. Of course there might be provocation enough but it would be as a soldier not as a d----- rubber-necker….Looks like some powder burning out in China. We have 50000 new veterans out in the East if Mac should brace up to using them and I don't think anyone wants to take a chance on a Dewey duplicate. But we have too many ninkumpoops here in the country for that…." Fine; light toning and minor ink transfer.

Julian Ralph (1953-1903) was an American newspaper correspondent who lived in England and covered various wars around the world. Conditions he suffered in the Boer War (1899-1902) probably caused the "ruined condition" to which Remington refers and contributed to his death.
