Remember: (Town Names Listed) 30" x 20" Artist: J.H.M. (intitals not known). This poster features an amazing somber drawing of what appears to be the Greek goddess Athena and a male figure prone before her feet. The poster mentions several famous and pivotal battles from the Great War, including; Argonne, Chateau-Thierry, St. Mihiel, Cantigny, and more. This poster was printed for the Victory Liberty Loan, which was the fifth and final Liberty Loan. The iconography of this fantastically drawn Athena is quite reminiscent of several famous Athena sculptures which are present currently in the Vatican collections. The Athena Velletri for example features an Athena holding a golden spear and phiale (though her hands have been restored), she wears a short aegis, belt, and himation over her peplos, and on her head is the famous Corinthian helmet, the same helmet which we see in the poster. This Athena is the model for the more detailed and stylistic Athena Giustininiani. Athena's presence on this poster is not surprising since she was the goddess of war and wisdom, as well as an icon for women in the ancient world. This poster was sponsored by the Women's Liberty Loan Committee so a goddess which was close to women and representative of their nature is quite appropriate. A wonderfully somber and emotive poster! A must have for any collection!

Condition-Superior; impeccable!
