Rembrant Peale Autograph Letter Signed
Rembrandt Peale Autograph Letter Signed with Sketch Included. Signed: Rembrandt Peale, three pages with integral address leaf, 8" x 10", Paris, August 18, 1808. This letter was written to his wife Eleanor, in it he talks about how he misses her, then describes in detail the celebration of Napoleon's birthday, including a sketch of mock warriors battling each other in a boat as part of the entertainment. He goes on to talk about some of the portraits he has done for the exhibition there: "…The last, Bernardin de St. Pierre is an interesting, patriarchal character, florid complexion & grey headed. I have succeeded so well as not only to please but to delight him & his friends…I have always endeavored to form a just estimate of the value of my pictures…they are praised for possessing those very qualities which you have heard me say I thought they possessed, strength of natural coloring, forcible & animated likenesses. May our children profit by the reputation of their father…". Rembrandt certainly profited from the reputation of his father, the renowned artist Charles Wilson Peale! An outstanding letter featuring a discussion of his work, with integral address leaf in his hand as well. In very fine condition; three old tape reinforcements present on the last page; small piece missing from edge of the last page from original wax seal being torn open, not affecting text; usual folds are present.
