Remarkable double-hammer, hand-revolved pepperbox type pistol signed C. Lancaster, London, on ribs of barrel, circa approx 1850. The pistol measures approx. 9” overall, with 3-3/4” barrel group of approx. .36 caliber smoothbore. The pistol shows English scroll engraving on frame and hammers with nicely checkered wood grips. The metal surfaces show a grey to brown patina finish with some traces of striping still showing on barrels. The metal surfaces are good with some beginning light erosion and surface pitting. The grips are good and show some wear to the edges and show very fine 100-line to the inch or greater checkering. There is a cap box mounted in the butt. At first glance the pistol appears to be a normal hand-revolved pepper box of the 1850’s, however upon examination, it’s noted there are two hammers, whereas this type normally has only one. When the barrels are hand revolved, two barrels come in line, one for each hammer. The pistol also shows two triggers, so each hammer can be fired independently. The bearer of the pistol has the option of firing his 6 shots one at a time or two at once. We are surprised Lancaster did not make more of these pistols as they are a good idea and
