Relief for Deaf and Dumb. Group of five
Relief for Deaf and Dumb. Group of five A.Ls.S., 1830-47, 7 pp. in all, all with integral address-leaves, to New York Deaf and Dumb Asylum. One letter from Englishman in Calcutta, India, former teacher in England, who requests help for instruction in India "to ameliorate the disturbing condition of the deaf and dumb." Another moving letter from a father whose "daughter is entirely deaf and dumb...She is very intelligent...can converse by means of signs with her mother." A postscript added at end, "The girl is very sanguine in her expectations. She has been disappointed so many times. I hope you will write...." Remaining three letters concern monies sent. Some defects where address-leaf was originally opened, light edge wear and foxing, else generally very good.
