Reipetown,NV - White Pine County - c1912 - Mining Town, Wet and Rough Photograph :
This photograph is a view of Reipetown, known during the first half of the 20th century as one of the wettest and toughest towns in the state. Photograph measures 6 5/8”x4 5/8”, black construction paper mount 9 3/4”x6 3/4”, low to medium contrast—washed out but town still visible, and focus is good. The photograph has faint spots caused from the glue used to affix the photo to the construction paper. Early 20th century autos are parked throughout the town and a few people are in the streets. Tailings can be seen in the background. Reipetown was founded in 1907 by Richard Reipe and became a haven for drinking, gambling, and prostitution. The Ruth Copper Mine kept many towns alive and provided Reipetown with many patrons. Nearby towns of Ruth and Kimberley structured their communities with a conservative agenda. Reipetown offered distractions for many miners from Kimberly and Ruth. The glory days lasted between 1909 and 1917. In 1917 a fire destroyed much of the town, but it recovered and still has a few residents today. Rare.
