Rein Schuetzen Rifle Cal: .38 SN: 2
Blued steel and brass percussion rifle with a 33-1/2" octagonal straight taper barrel measuring 1.025" across the flats, adjustable rear sight, double set triggers, brass "Schuetzen" buttplate and forend cap, select wood pistol grip half stock with a left side cheek rest and lightly engraved triggerguard. There are no thimbles and no provision for a ramrod. The consignor calls this an Ohio rifle. The barrel is stamped, "Rein" on the top flat and "2" on the muzzle The metal finish is worn or faded silver freckled with rust discoloration. The trigger guard is almost in-the-white. Front sight, rear sight, barrel wedge and lockplate may have been color case hardened. Screw heads on the tang, the barrel wedge escutcheons, grip cap and the trigger guard are all indexed to the line of the bore. The muzzle is turned round for 3/8". The edges on the flats are sharp and there is only one ding of any notable size near the muzzle with various scratches and rubs and smaller dings. The well-figured stock has dings, rubs and scratches but no cracks and retains sharp edges on the barrel channel and cheek rest. The checkered wrist has had some of the diamonds worn or knocked down. The scalloped grip cap has only a few small rubs and dings. The buttplate and forend cap each have a few scratches and small dings in the brass. The bore has 6 lands and grooves and is somewhat shiny with sharp rifling. Action with set triggers works well. Condition is excellent as antique.
