Regulation Civil War Model 1850 Foot Officers Sword

Estimate: $1400 - 2250
Regulation Model 1850 Foot Officers Sword with leather brass-mounted scabbard marked "Lambert & Mast Philadelphia" on blade. The sword has a 30 1/2 inch slightly curved blade with two fullers and a spear point. The blade is probably German but lacks the usual SOLINGEN markings on the ricasso. The obverse of the blade is acid etched with the importer's name, a stand of colors, an eagle and shield and military trophies surrounded by floral sprays. The acid etching is highlighted with dry needle engraving. The reverse of the blade is acid etched with "U.S." flanked by military trophies, a stand of colors and floral sprays. The grip is covered with fish skin and wound with brass wire. The Phrygian helmet pommel has a spray of cast oak leaves along the lower edge. The ribbed knuckle bow is pierced for a sword knot and the counter guard is decorated with pierced floral decorations. The counter guard has a down-turned quillon with feathered back. The regulation scabbard has a black leather body with gold-plated brass throat, middle band and tip. Suspension rings are attached to the throat and middle band.

Condition: Fine. The excellent blade has most of the original polish and the frosted background. The acid etched decorations and dry needle engraving are sharp. Wear is limited to some scattered age discoloration. The gold-plated brass hilt has a dark un-polished patina; the cast decorations on the pommel and counter guard are sharp. The grip has darkened with age but all of the fish skin cover and wire wrap remain intact. The black leather scabbard body is crazed but the stitching is intact. Traces of the original gold-plated finish are visible on the throat, middle band and tip. This is a fine example of the regulation company grade officer's sword carried by infantry lieutenants and captains in both the Federal and Confederate armies.
