Reg Smythe (1917-1998) created the Andy Capp comic strip for the Daily Mirror in 1957. In 1960, Smythe became a founding member of the Cartoonists Club of Great Britain.
Andy Capp became an icon of the British working class and was hugely popular. The cartoon successfully reached 50 countries and was printed in some 700 newspapers.
In this four panel comic strip, Andy Capp is shown with his trademark plaid cap, pulled down over his eyes as always. Set in Capp's residence, No. 37 Durham Street, the character is shown mid-argument with his wife as he leaves the house.
The strip is drawn on thick artist's board and shows original alterations and additions to the layout. The piece is dated in blue pen on the top left, "Tues/Wed 15-12-76". A ticked initial marks the bottom right corner, while a small fingerprint smudge, probably the artist's, is found on the bottom left portion of the card.
In excellent condition, this truly unique original drawing measures 5½" x 15".
