Original oil on board sign for the world-famous Red Dog Saloon in Virginia City. This sign is signed by the artist at lower right "Miss Kitty 2/03". 43.5" wide, 48" tall. No frame. Pierce Powell Collection. Modeled after the original Red Dog Saloon sign but in its own spirit, this high quality painted sign well reflects the fusion between the 1960's psychedelic art and a more modernistic style. The Red Dog changed hands several times, and this sign reflects ownership right after the turn into the twenty first century. This sign hung inside above the stage. The author of the sign "Miss Kitty" is in clear reference to Miss Kitty, the Madame of the Long Branch Saloon in the TV series "Gunsmoke," from which the Red Dog Saloon was loosely modeled after it was purchased and revamped from the Comstock Saloon to the Red Dog Saloon in 1965. "Miss Kitty" was a local Virginia City artist who painted the murals in the basement of one of the Virginia City churches. She worked in the kitchen at the Red Dog. Provenance: Pierce Powell Collection. State: Nevada City: Virginia City Date: 2003
