Some images lightly foxed, not materially affecting their appearance.<B> </B></I>Comprises: <B>(1) Hiram R. Revels</B></I> ("<I>H R Revels</B></I>"), 2.5" x 3.5", upper edge and top corners trimmed. Upon the readmission of Mississippi to representation in the Congress after the Civil War, Revels, a Republican, became the <B>first African American U.S. Senator</B></I>, serving from February 23, 1870 to March 3, 1871. Extremely rare. <B>(2) Joseph P. Bradley</B></I> ("<I>Jos: P. Bradley</B></I>"), 2.5" x 3.5", upper edge and top corners trimmed. Appointed Associate Justice of the Supreme Court by Grant, Bradley served from 1870-1892. <B>(3) John A. Bingham</B></I> ("<I>Jno. A Bingham</B></I>"), 2.5" x 4". Bingham was Special Judge Advocate in the trial of the Lincoln assassination conspirators and chaired the House committee that argued the articles of impeachment during Pres. Andrew Johnson's trial, giving the closing, three-day summation.<B> (4) Francis E. Spinner</B></I> ("<I>F.E. Spinner</B></I>"), 2.5" x 4". Spinner was Treasurer of the United States from 1861-1875. <B>(5) George S. Boutwell</B></I> ("<I>Geo. S. Boutwell</B></I>"), 2.5" x 4". Boutwell was one of the House managers of the Johnson impeachment and Grant's Secretary of the Treasury, 1869-1873. <B>(6) Petroleum V. Nasby</B></I> ("<I>D.R. Locke/Petroleum V. Nasby/PM (which is Postmaster)</B></I>," 2.5" x 4", upper left of image is creased with loss of corner, soiling in signature area. Northerner David R. Locke wrote articles under his pseudonym Petroleum V. Nasby, a detestable character who championed the Confederate cause writing in semi-literate spelling in such a way as to rally support for the Union. After the War, Nasby was willing to do anything to get a Postmaster appointment which meant to him a paying government job with no work.
