Receipt for Bundles of Straw Used at Mount Vernon. One page, 6.75" x 4.25", Mount Vernon, July 5, 1792. This original document has been signed "William Crouch" in dark brown ink at the lower right. The words, "Mr. Lear for use of president" appears as this document's first line, and one can only assume that Mr. Lear is settling this payment on behalf of George Washington, as Tobias Lear was the private Secretary to George Washington and remained a close associate until Washington's death in 1799. Docketed on the verso as: "Rec. Wm. Crouch - for 22 ct. Hay - 100 Straw - July 5, 1792." In fine condition; light overall toning; nice dark saturated ink; usual folds present.
