Rear Admiral John Dahlgren ALS
Rear Admiral John Dahlgren Autograph Letter Signed “John A. Dahlgren”. Two pages, 7.75” x 10”, Panama, December 13, 1866, to Congressman N. P. Banks. This letter provides an interesting insight on post-Civil War relations with England. Dahlgren writes to Banks, who at the time was Chairman of Foreign Affairs: “As you are now engaged in presenting to the House some propositions relative to our foreign relations, permit me to draw your attention to the importance of including in them a protest on the part of the U.S. against the continued possession of England of the islands that lay off our Atlantic frontier - particularly the Bahamas…The injuries to which our Country was exposed from this cause, while suppressing the Rebellion, are notorious- Arms, ammunition and supplies of various kinds for maintaining the insurrection were furnished from these islands…The opportunity now occurs for a proper settlement of this wrong and its prevention in future…”. John Adolphus Bernard Dahlgren headed the Union navy's ordnance department and was responsible for several armament designs. A crisp letter, with the usual fold creases, else fine. From the collection of Henry E. Luhrs.

Shipping: Flat Material, Small (view shipping information)
