Read & Watson First Type Confederate issue rifle formerly identified as the work of J. B. Barrett. Both Read and Barrett were from Virginia. The rifle shows a brass integral collar at the rear of the receiver that is part of the upper tang witha 33” barrel and 48” length overall; .54 caliber percussion. These rifles utilized Hall rifle parts in inventory at Virginia Armories (Refer Falyderman 10-025). The metal surfaces show a grey patina with some scattered old mars and lightspots of erosion; the three barrel bands are matching in condition as is the iron trigger guard and iron butt plate; the action is good, the wood full length stock is overall very good with an approx. 3” horizontal crack on the left side ofthe fore stock area just behind the second band; the #H 22 is stamped on the underside of the butt stock behind the lower tang; the iron ramrod is retained. No evidence of restoration of any sort and a very difficult to obtain Confederate arm.The collection of William A. Gary consigned by his estate. (Antique). Est.: $8,500-$17,000.
