Reach for the Sky (Rank, 1956). Insert (14" X 36"). Director Lewis Gilbert has helmed one of the most quietly successful careers in film. He has sat in the director's chair for three James Bond films ("You Only Live Twice," "The Spy Who Love Me" and "Moonraker"), two Michael Caine minor masterpieces ("Alfie" and "Educating Rita") and a litany of 1950s war films. A distinct "British-ness" unites his diverse filmography, whether wild spectacle or personal drama, and this film proves no different. Douglas Bader lost both of his legs in an accident. (Actor Kenneth More had his legs cased in aluminium in order to accurately portray a life with prosthetics). Nevertheless, he became a WWII squadron commander, and when shot down over France and held prisoner by the Germans, he survived and returned to lead 3,000 British planes in a victorious flight. This insert proudly displays the film's metaphoric paean to England's own survival during the war, and the poster has survived quite well itself. Very minor stains, a couple of nicks and wear on the edges and a small crease all barely merit notice. Very Fine/Near Mint.
