Re-enlistment Group (Lot of 8) WWI Posters Re-enlistment Group
Re-enlistment Group (Lot of 8) This lot includes eight posters which promoted re-enlistment after the war was over. This lot features 2 of the 14"x 11" "Re-enlist Now!" posters by Otho Cushing; 1 14"x11" "The U.S. Army Wants Real Men" by an unsigned artist; 2 of the 11"x 14" "Forget It Son" posters by Gordon Grant; 2 of the 15"x 11" "Service in the Army" posters by an unsigned artist; and finally 1 14"x11" "Fifty Thousand Men..." by Gordon Grant. This lot focuses on what sort of opportunities and options there were for soldiers who had been discharged after the war. The Great War was unique in that it pulled many young men away from their normal jobs, and when they were set to return many of their jobs no longer existed or had been taken over by individuals who could not serve overseas. In an official document printed by the United States Army, dated 1919, it promised soldiers who had been discharged on or after April 6th, 1917 "would be paid, in additional to all amounts due to them in pursuance of law, $60.00 each." The explanation for this "hefty" sum of $60.00 was, "This money is intended to bridge over the period between your leaving the army and getting a position in civil life, and should not be squandered. It is not a windfall, but comes directly or indirectly from the hard earned savings of your family and from the war taxes and liberty bonds to which they contributed." Needless to say soldiers were compensated little by the Army, and these posters seem to point out the negative side to turning to civilian life, telling them to just re-enlist, that the cost of living was too high. These negative posters are set against others which promote employment agencies, and government sanctioned programs to incorporate discharged soldiers into businesses. These posters are a great chance to grab one side of the story! Do not miss these posters; they illustrate a time when America was reeling over its first "Great War."
