TLS signed “Ray,” one page, 8.5 x 11, June 18, 1961. Letter to poet and critic John Ciardi, director of the Middlebury Bread Loaf Writers' Conference in Vermont. In part: "This is a very hard letter to write. I feel guilt-ridden and heavily burdened with it, already. Instead of being kept at MGM for six months, as I had once imagined, I have been kept on and on and on for almost a year. As a result of the politics, the finagling, and the delays, MGM has succeeded in ruining many months I had thought might once belong to me. My schedule for the rest of the year is destroyed almost completely. So, very late in the day, I face the task of telling you and Breadloaf that I won't be able to come East at all for the Conference…I hope you will be upset and irritated and drive your energetic bile against MGM rather than against me. I think you know how much I wanted to be with you there. I don't think I have felt so badly about writing a letter in any other time of my life. For I realize I am disappointing not only you, but a number of other people who will have signed up to meet me at the Conference." In fine condition.
