Ray Bradbury: Fahrenheit 451 in Asbestos with Typed Letter Signed. New York: Ballantine Books, Inc., [1953].

First edition. Numbered 201 of 200 limited edition copies and signed by the author on the limitation page. Octavo. 199 pages. Illustrated by Joe Mugnaini.

Specially bound in cream Johns-Manville Quinterra, a chrysolite asbestos material, with red titles on the front cover and spine (Currey binding D [no priority]). No dust jacket (as issued). Also includes the stories "The Playground" and "And the Rock Cried Out". Mild damp-staining to the front board, minimal wear at the spine ends, and light wear to the edges. The textblock shows minimal overall toning and barely noticeable dust-soiling to the top edge. Overall, a very good, attractive copy of Bradbury's seminal masterpiece.

Accompanying the book is a Typed Letter Signed from Ray Bradbury to Mr. Yaspan, written on the author's personal stationery. In the letter, dated March 16, 1974, Mr. Bradbury writes, in part: "It may well be that there were a few extra copies of the Asbestos Edition made. I took the front pages along on the boat to France that autumn, to sign on the way. I seem to recall (and it was more than 20 years ago!) that I signed at least 210 or 215 separate pages...so those might have gone into 10 or 15 copies over and beyond those indicated on the asbestos frontispiece!" Mr. Bradbury's letter would certainly explain how this very copy came to be numbered 201 out of 200 copies!

Number 8 in David Pringle's Science Fiction: The 100 Best Novels. From the Robert and Diane Yaspan Collection.

Shipping: Books & Catalogs (view shipping information)
