Rawlins,WY - Carbon County - c1890 - Stage Coach Loaded and Idle Photograph :
Travel by Stage Coach was often rough and dirty, as one is able to surmise from this photo. Photograph measures 8”x5 3/4”, black single matte 12”x10”, high contrast, and the focus is sharp. There are a couple foxing spots on the photo and the matte has wear around the corners and edges. Photographer identified as Ferris of The Ferris Studio in Rawlins, WY. (not in Mautz) Location based on the photographer’s studio. This is a great shot of a mud caked stage that has clearly seen some action. Men and women pose in and atop the stage in front of a building. Rawlins is located in south-central Wyoming along I-80. The current location of the town was discovered by General John A. Rawlins, while guarding a work detachment from the Transcontinental Railroad construction. General Rawlins discovered a spring where present day Rawlins is and thereafter the spring and town have been attributed to the decorated Civil War veteran. Rawlins was incorporated in 1886. Through the 20th century Rawlins found economic stability in the oil industry.
