Rawhide,NV - Mineral County - c1908 - Rawhide Rustler Photographs :
Lot of 2. Two nice views of four men (the one wearing an apron is likely a printer), two women, and two dogs standing outside the office of the "Rawhide Rustler." The original image measures 8 x 6", and is mounted on 10 x 8" black cardstock matte with brown artist's tape covering each corner. The computer corrected photo print measures 9 x 6" and has a 12 x 9" off-white colored matte. The contrast is high and the focus is sharp on both images. The original image was damaged during printing of an issue of Nevada Magazine when a scanner operator tried to remove the photo from its backing. The matte corners were also damaged during this time. In an included letter, the magazine's art director stated that the ripped portion (above the head of the man on the left) was fixed using glue, while the artist's tape was used to cover damage done to the edges. A small pen mark can also be seen in the upper right corner, otherwise it is very fine. The copy and its matte are also in fine shape. Stamper on the reverse is "E. Goepfert Photo., Rawhide, NV." (not listed in Mautz) The image shows several people, all well dressed, standing outside of the "Rawhide Rustler," a local newspaper published in Rawhide, NV from Oct 31, 1907-1909. The mining boom in Rawhide began in August 1907, reached its height between April and August of 1908, and ended around the time a large fire destroyed much of the town on September 4, 1908. Its peak population reached 7,000 around March - June 1908, while the post office was open between October 1907 and August 1941. Rawhide had the latest electrical technology of its day in use - two telegraph lines and one long-distance telephone. During its heyday, Rawhide had three banks, two daily and three weekly newspapers, along with daily auto stage and mail service from Schurz, Fallon, and Mina. A total of $800,000 was paid in 1908 by Eugene Grutt and his partners for the property consisting of the main townsite - a 200 acre parcel which included Hooligan, Balloon, and Grutt Hills.
