Rawhide,NV - Mineral County - September 4, 1908 - Burning of Town Photograph :
The infamous fire at Rawhide was captured by N.E. Johnson. Photograph measures 7”x5”, no matte, high to medium contrast, and focus is sharp. Photograph in good shape except for the writing on the back of the photo, which has placed an indentation on the image side. The indentation is mainly visible at an angle. The writing on the reverse appears to be period and reads, “This gives you some idea of the fire. Started at 9:50 out at 11:15. This is diagonally across from Ross Hotel, s… of fire. Chic, Sept. 4, 1908, Rawhide, Nev.”. Photographer identified as N.E Johnson. Mautz tells us that N.E. Johnson was active in Oatman and Parker, Arizona between 1910 and 1920. A great deal of promotion brought thousands to Rawhide in 1908. In six months the town grew from tents to a modern city. The fire in September of that year could be looked at as a tuning point in the mining town. "The nearly million dollar fire wiped out a third of a mile of businesses and leveled several dozen residences. The camp partially rebuilt with bigger buildings, but the smart money noted that less than $1.5 million had been taken from the over publicized mines, and the boom cooled" (Paher, Nevada Ghost Towns and Mining Camps).
