Ratification of the War of 1812 Treaty of Ghent
February 22, 1815-Dated War of 1812 Era Newspaper. COLUMBIAN CENTINEL. Printed for Benjamin Russell, Boston, MA. Very Fine.
No. 3,222, 4-column layout, 14.25” x 19.75”, 4 pages. Scarce newspaper with first printing in Boston of the Treaty of Peace that ended the War of 1812. Page 2 has two wide columns headed: “RATIFIED TREATY OF PEACE AND AMIT Y/ A PROCLAMATION. JAMES MADISON, PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” with a complete printing of the treaty of Ghent, from Dec. 24, 1814, signed in type by Madison and James Monroe, who was Secretary of State. Includes other articles describing how the text of the treaty arrived by express, planned celebrations, detailed order of the procession to celebrate the Peace & Washington’s birthday, illuminations of buildings, and more. Page one has 2+ columns of official reports pertaining to Andrew Jackson’s victory at the Battle of New Orleans, fought in January before it was known that a treaty had been signed; includes a list of casualties; British military report on the Battle of Chippewa, and much more. Disbound, small edge tears, lightly toned. Ink stain on pages. 1 and 2, but generally quite nice--especially the woodcut masthead logo and other graphics!
