Rare pair of original documents, whereas Col. Shannon challenges General Cash near the town of Bishop Bille, South Carolina. Circa 1880. And America’s last known formal duel. The fatal encounter was the result of slander against Colonel Shannon, a prominent attorney from Camden, S.C., by General Ellerbe B. Cash and his family, who were wealthy planters from the same region. The provoked Col. Shannon hereby challenges Gen. Cash on June 27th 1880. On a piece of lined paper 8-1/4” by 5”. It is a succinct challenge which names W. E. Johnson as Shannon’s second, who will make all the arrangements “(for a hostile meeting)”. Signed W. M. Shannon. Addressed to General E. B. Cash, Cash’s depot, S.C. Neatly written in pencil. Document is in good condition with just some slight folding, normal aging. The acceptance is on lined paper measuring 8” by 5” dated June 28, 1880, address to Color William M. Shannon. Cash succinctly states his friend will meet with Mr. Johnson to accept his demand for satisfaction. Neatly written in pen and signed E. B. Cash. The duel was fought at 15 paces and Col.
