Rare factory engraved Model 1873 Winchester short rifle, 44-40 cal., 20” octagon barrel, set trigger, carbine rear sight, engraved $2.00; received in warehouse May 19, 1892; shipped from the warehouse May 27, 1892 along with 11 otherrifles with same specifications to same order number, #425294 (knowledgeable parties speculate these went to President Diaz of Mexico, who was Winchester’s best customer at this time). Only a few factory engraved short rifles in the ’73 Model are known to exist. The Winchester remains in original good condition with smooth grey metal surfaces, some light to moderate scattered erosion and pin prick pitting; some slightly heavy pitting on the rear area of the frame around thehammer well but generally good metal surfaces with good barrel address, caliber markings and visible engraving. The stocks have been lightly re-finished; the action is good; bore fair and the barrel seems slightly heavier than standard. Itwould be hard to find a rarer engraved ’73. Est.: $7,000-$14,000.
